Annular Solar Eclipse

A rare opportunity to witness the Annular Solar Eclipse occurred on 21st June 2020. Annular Solar Eclipse of 21st June started its annularity from the Central African Republic in the morning hours and then proceeds to Congo, Ethiopia, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Pakistan, India, China and Taiwan. It ended in the evening in the South Pacific Ocean. On 21st June, only four states of Northern India witnessed the annularity viz. Rajasthan, Haryana, grazing part of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. However, entire India will witness the partial phase of the eclipse. The centre line of eclipse passed through a village in Kurukshetra which was around 8 kms from Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium on Kurukshetra-Pehowa Road. Annual Solar Eclipse was visible 100 % on this centre line i.e complete ring was formed. A team of Scientists from Vigyan Prasar, Govt. of India, some amateur scientists running their science clubs at Farookhabad, Lucknow and Kurukshetra were also present. The Dept. of Science & Technology, Haryana alongwith the above scientists had covered the Annular Solar eclipse from different locations at Kurukshetra. One team had covered the event from the line of totality which was passing through village Murtzapur at Kurukshetra which is around 8 kms from Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium on Kurukshetra-Pehowa Road. Another team of Dept of Science and Technology covered the event with 8” SCT telescope and one pin hole type telescope projection box setup from Brahmsarovar. Observations were taken during the eclipse, the partial eclipse started at 10:21:06, at 12:01:40 it became maximum i.e ring was formed and Partial ended at 13:47:27. Total time duration of eclipse was 3 hours 26 minutes and 21 seconds.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, the United Nations General Assembly had resolved on 22nd December 2015 to declare 11th February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. To highlight the critical role of women and girls in the field of science and technology and to mark the occasion, HSCSIT has organized a programme to celebrate the day at Govt. College of Girls, Sector – 14, Panchkula on 11.02.2020. Two Women scientists namely Dr. Keya Dharamvir, Retried Prof. from Physics Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Dr. Tamanna R Sehrawat, Associate Prof., Bioinformatics, Panjab University, Chandigarh and both from Society for Promotion of Science and Technology in India (SPSTI) delivered talks on the importance of the day and defining the important role to be played by females in taking science and technology to new heights. The topic of the talk of Dr. Keya Dharamvir was the importance of nanotechnology and material and their uses in present and future in various fields and medical science in particular. Dr. Tamanna delivered an interesting talk on the topic of Comutation Biology and Bioinformatics. She also elaborated that with the help of computation biology, the cost of drug research can be reduced significantly. The programme was attended by more than 300 Undergraduate level girl students of science stream.

A Tribute to Kalpana Chawla

On 17thdeath anniversary of Dr. Kalpana Chawla, a special program ‘Tribute to Kalpana Chawla-2020’ was organized at Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium (KCMP) on 01.02.2020. Students and teachers were invited from nearby colleges of Kurukshetra. Various educational activities were organized for invited students and teachers. Given the upcoming Annular Solar Eclipse on June 21th 2020, special emphasis was given on activities based on observation of solar eclipse. A Science lecture on topic ‘The Sun in Eclipse’ was delivered by invited guest Dr. N.Rathnasree, Director, Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi. Two hands on activities session were also conducted during the program. In first session, demonstration on inevitable Sun Projection Setup was given by Dr. Rathnasree. In her demonstration, she explored about preparation and use of Sun projection setup for the observation of sun and eclipse. In second session,hands on activities session was conducted by Sh. DarshanLal and Sh. Gaurav Kumar, Science teachers from Yamuna Nagar. In this session, astronomy experiments based on Astronomy Kit developed by VigyanPrasar were performed for invited students and teachers. About 140 students along with teachers participated in this program.

Organizing Exposure Visits for meritorious students

First visit was organized at National Science Centre, New Delhi on 16th January, 2020 and second visit was organized at PushpaGujral Science City, Kapurthala during 28th to 30th January, 2020.

Celebration of National Mathematics Day

National Mathematics Day was celebrated at Department of Mathematics & Statistics CSHAU, Hisar in two phases. On 24th December, a large number of activities such as On the spot drawing competition for students of class 1st – 5th, Poster Making competition for students of class 5th – 8th, Fast Computation competition for the students of class 5th to 8th and Quiz competition for the students of class 9th to 12th for school students were organized. Around 200 students from more than 15 schools participated in this event. In second phase on 21stJanuary ,2020 a Debate and Declamation competition among the students of different colleges of CCSHAU and some degree colleges of Hisar was organized. A Mathematical Rangoli Competition was held in the morning on January22, 2020. One day workshop under the theme “Recent Computational techniques of Mathematical Sciences for Researchers” was organized in on 22nd January, 2020. There were about 170 participants in this workshop from different colleges. Most of the participants were either faculty or research students.

Mobile Science Exhibition by Indian Space Research Organization(I.S.R.O)

Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium (KCMP) in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Bangalore organized two days ‘Space on Wheels’ exhibition on 13.12.2019 and 14.12.2019. The exhibition was to attract students and general public of Kurukshetra and nearby area to know about space science and its utility for the mankind. A team of seven persons from ISRO (including 4 Scientists and 3 supporting staff) interacted with students and visitors about the Indian Space Programs and also gave untiring demonstrations. Around 1500 people visited the exhibition out of which 90% were school students along with their teachers.

Participation in India International Science Festival

Haryana State Council for Science, Innovation & Technology (HSCSIT) has participated in India International Science Festival (IISF) 2019 organized at Biswa Bangla Convention Centre & Science City, Kolkata during 05-08 November, 2019. Exhibits of Haryana Space Application Centre (HARSAC) and State Universities were exhibited in IISF Expo. Students and general public visited from all over the country were briefed about the activities of the Council. HSCSIT has also attended State Science & Technology Ministers Conclave (SSTMC) on November 6, 2019.

Celebration of National Technology Day

Under this scheme, technical institutions of the state are provided financial assistance of Rs.10,000/- each to polytechnics/ ITIs and Rs.20,000/- each to the engineering colleges and department of engineering and technology in the universities in the state.During the year 2019-20, Council has released an amount of Rs.3.20 Lakhs to 6 polytechnics/ITI’s and 13 Engineering colleges/university department of engineering & technology for Celebration of National Technology Day-2019 in their respective institutions.
