Environment Awareness Programmes

In connection with 75 week long Bharat Ka Amrut Maholsav programme KSCSTE in association with National Green Corps organized programmes for promoting sustainable life style, “Green Good Deeds” from 16th -22nd April 2021. The following programmes under Green Good Deeds were organized in ecoclubs is as follows.

2. KSCSTE in association with NGC DIMC Trivandrum and WWF organised webinar on the focal theme “Restore Our Earth” on 22nd April 2021 for NGC ecoclub students and teachers. The programme was inaugurated and lead by Shri. Renjan Mathew Varghese, State Director WWF. Technical sessions were delivered by Dr. C.S Raveendran, Former principal Scientist, ICAR.

3. KSCSTE and NGC DIMC Trivandrum jointly organised webinar on the Topic Eco-restoration through nature based solutions on 3rd June 2021 by Dr. A. Bijukumar, Prof & Head, Aquatic Biology & Fisheries, University of Kerala. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Anilkumar C, State Nodal officer NGC. 400 students from various ecoclubs participated.

4. KSCSTE and NGC DIMC Malappuram district jointly organised webinar on the Topic Eco-restoration on 5rd June 2021 by Dr. Anilkumar C, State Nodal officer NGC.

5. KSCSTE and NGC DIMC Kozhikode organised Environment Day programmes from June 4th to 10th . The programmes includes Distribution of saplings, Plantation Drives, Painting Competition for LP and UP students of NGC ecoclub schools etc.

6. NGC KSCSTE in association with Department of Aquatic biology and Fisheries and CISSA organised Webinar on the theme “Inspiring Ocean Stories” for NGC ecoclub students. 500 students participated in the webinar. Expert researchers and scientists share their stories of ocean and ocean creatures.

Webinar on Sustainable Wastewater Management: Challenges and Opportunities in Environmental Engineering

Organised a webinar on 30 March 2021 to honour the service rendered by Shri. Jayakumar P, Head, Hydrology & Climatology Research Group. The lecture contained introduction and works done by Sri. Jayakumar P, given by Prof. K P Sudheer, Executive Vice President, KSCSTE. This was followed by a lecture by Prof. Pradip P Kalbar on Hybrid Treatment Systems: A pardigm shift to achieve sustainable wastewater recycling in India. The last talk by Dr. George K Varghese on the topic Environmental Forensics-The way forward in wastewater management.

World Wetland Day

Ecology and Environment Research Group, CWRDM had conducted several programmes in connection with the observance of World Wetlands Day on 2nd February 2021. The theme of the programme ‘Wetlands and Water’ was well exhibited and the idea was spread through various activities and programs. The programmes included Webinar on wetland and water, Painting competition for school students, Quiz competition for college students, Seminar presentation for college students and Photography contest for public.

33rd Kerala Science Congress

The 33rd session of the Kerala Science Congress was conducted as a virtual event from 25-30 January 2021. The focal theme of 33rd KSC was Pandemics: Risks, Impact and Mitigation. The programme was inaugurated by Hon'ble Chief Minister of Kerala on 30.01.2021. Dr. Jacob John, Retd. Professor in Virology, CMC Vellore was the chairman of 33rd KSC. There were focal theme lectures, Memorial lectures and paper presentations from 12 subject areas.

National Science Day

KSCSTE-CWRDM organized a webinar for observing National Science Day 2021 under the theme 'Future of STI: Impact on Education, Skills and Work'. Corroborating with the theme of NSD-2021, CWRDM organized expert talks by the luminaries in Indian academic arena, Prof. M K Jayaraj, Vice Chancellor, University of Calicut; Padma Shri Prof. Pradeep T, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and Prof. Subimal Ghosh, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay on 1st March 2021 on topics focusing on scientifically designed technological innovations. A debate competition was also conducted on the subject ‘Social media-academic and research performance - pros and cons’ for the research/project/post graduate students of CWRDM.

National Ground water conference

CWRDM has organised 3rd Indian National Groundwater Conference at CWRDM HQ from 17 to 20 February 2020. Jointly conducted with Central Groundwater Board and NIT Calicut. Around 200 delegates from different countries participated in the event

32nd Kerala Science Congress

32nd Session of Kerala Science Congress was held at Yuvakshetra Institute of Management Studies, Palakkad from 24th to 27th January 2020. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the session on 25th January 2020. He presented Dr. S. Vasudev Award to Dr. N. Sandhyarani, NIT Calicut, Chief Minister’s Gold Medal to 3 numbers of Young Scientist Awardees and 3numbers of Science Literature Awards. The focal theme of 32nd KSC was “Science & Technology for Climate Change Resilience & Adaptation”. Dr Akhilesh Gupta, Adviser and Head, Climate Change Programme, SPLICE, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, Dr Subimal Ghosh, Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, IIT, Mumbai, Dr. Nambi Appadurai, Director, World Resources Institute (WRI India), Parel Mumbai were the speakers in this session. Four Memorial Lectures were presented during this Science Congress session. Shri. P T Bhaskara Panicker Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr. Gautam Goswami, Scientist F & Head Technology Vision 2035 Exercise, TIFAC, and Dr P K Gopalakrishnan Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. Sunil Mani, Director, CDS, TVM by on the first day of 32ndKSC. On the 2nd day, Dr. P. R. Pisharoty Memorial lecture was delivered by Dr. P. P. Mujumdar, JC Bose National Fellow, Chairman, Interdisciplinary Centre for Water Research and Dr. P. K Iyengar Memorial lecture was delivered by Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, Honorary Distinguished Professor, ISRO, ISRO Headquarters, New BEL Road, Bengaluru. A total of 439 delegates were registered for the 32nd KSC. 317 delegates submitted papers in 12 subject areas. After peer reviewing, out of 317 technical papers received, 154 papers were selected for Oral presentation and 118 for poster presentation. Poster presentation was conducted on 25th January 2020 evening from 4pm to 7 pm and Oral presentations was on 26th January 2020 11.00 am to 3.30pm. Technical sessions in each subject area was started with a Lead lecture by an eminent scientist in the area. The main attraction of the 3rdday was the Children’s Science Congress session. 16child scientists, who had attended the National Children Science Congress at Thiruvananthapuram were presented their project work in this session. About 250 students from different schools of Palakkad District attended the Children’s Science Congress session.

Environment Management Training

Environment Management Training scheme ensures training and man power development in various areas of Environment Management to stakeholders for better Conservation and Protection of Environment. KSCSTE co-ordinated by way of providing financial assistance and conducted the Environment Management Training programs from December to January 2019 in 11 institutions consisting of R&D Institutions, University Departments, Government/ Aided Professional Colleges, and Government/Aided Colleges within the State. About 900-1000 target groups participated through 7 training program conducted in the State. An average of 50-75 experts in the relevant areas within the state and outside was involved for the training programme

27th National Children's Science Congress

Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) hosted the 27th edition of National Children’s Science Congress and the 1st in Kerala during 27th to 31st December 2019 at Mar Ivanios Vidyanagar, Thiruvanathapuram, with the participation of 652 Child Scientists from 28 States, 8 Union Territories, Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Gulf Countries. 228 Escort teachers, 91 Organising/Academic coordinators, National Academic committee members and eminent scientists were also part of the programme. The event started off with a colorful procession of the participants in their own state attire from Mar Ivanios College to the Mar Ivanios College ground. Technical sessions for the 27th NCSC were scheduled in 12 parallel sessions on 27th, 28th and 29th December 2019. Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology was the venue for the technical sessions and the 12 halls were named after eminent scientists. The National Academic Committee (NAC) team prepared the schedule of the presentations for the convenience of Child Scientists. The presentations were based on the focal theme “Science, Technology and Innovation for a Clean, Green and Healthy Nation”. Child Scientist were awarded for the best promising project at the valedictory function held on 31st December 2019. The presentations were evaluated by the scientists from National institutes and KSCSTE R&D centres who are familiar with different languages in the country as NCSC offers a platform for the students to present their project in mother tongue. An evaluators workshop was conducted by NAC team on 26th December at Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology for the scientists. 40 Scientist were present for the workshop and evaluation.


Swachh – Nirmal Tat Abhiyaan – Kozhikode & Kannur

Considering these inevitability, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate change (MoEF & CC), Govt. of India organized a mass cleanliness-cum awareness drives in beaches named as Swachh – Nirmal Tat Abhiyaan involving National Green Corps – eco club students and colleges/ local community and volunteers in the identified beaches of Kerala from 11th to 18th November 2019. CWRDM had organized the programme by join hand together with district administration, Kozhikode, Kozhikode Corporation, district education department, NGOs’, Residents’ associations etc. The exciting part was Union Minister, MLA, elected officials, district collector, Executive vice president of KSCSTE, Executive Director of CWRDM, Scientists, leaders, students and private citizens had joined under one umbrella to make this program successful. The programme had planned as two segments: 1) Beach cleaning and 2) Awareness programmes on beach cleanliness. The goal is to make people aware about marine debris, and are engaged and empowered to make a change. In Kozhikode, 1950 participants of different schools, government and non-governmental officials, NGOs, Residents associations around Kozhikode worked tirelessly to collect over 488 bags of trash.

Seminar on ‘Intellectual Property Rights’

PIC-Kerala in association with St. Gregorios College, Kottarakkara organized a one day National Seminar on ‘Intellectual Property Rights’ at Kottarakkara on 28th May, 2019. Shri. P.H.Kurian IAS, Former Additional Chief Secretary, Govt. of Kerala and Former Controller General of Patents & Designs inaugurated the Seminar. Three technical sessions on various aspects of IPR were handled by experts. Around 150 participants including Students and faculty members attended the Seminar.

Technology Festival (TECHFEST)

TECHFEST, renamed as TEKON, is a state level annual event for the Innovative Engineering Products, in order to encourage and promote technological innovations and inventions emerging from the Engineering Colleges in the State. TEKON 2019 was organized jointly with A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University during 15th 17thFebruary 2019, at Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur. Dr. R.A.D. Pillai, Former Deputy Director, VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram inaugurated the event. Applications for participating in TECHFEST- 2019 were invited from Engineering Colleges across Kerala and from the applications received, 43 applications were selected by the Screening Committee for the contest category of TEKON and 56 applications were selected for exhibition. Out of 311 proposals received under INNOVATE 2019, 75 proposals were shortlisted for financial assistance for prototype development, by an Expert Committee. Total of 145 projects (42 under contest, 68 under INNOVATE & 35 under exhibition) were exhibited in the event. Shri. V.S. Sunil Kumar,Hon'ble Minister for for Agriculture gave away the prizes to the winners of the contest in the valedictory session held on 17thFebruary 2019.

31st Kerala Science Congress

The Kerala Science Congress (KSC) is an event initiated by the erstwhile Science, Technology & Environment Committee (STEC) way back in 1989, which has become an annual event thereafter. KSC over the years has been providing a platform for young researchers, scientists, academicians, technologists and all interested in Science& Technology from the State and elsewhere to exchange knowledge and share their research findings for the S & T development of the State. The 31stsession of Kerala Science Congress was held at Fatima Mata National College, Kollam, Kerala from 2nd to 3rd February 2019. The event was inaugurated by the Hon. Chief Minister and President of the KSCSTE, Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan on 2nd February 2019 at 10.00 am. Hon. Chief Minister presented Dr. S. Vasudev Award, Chief Ministers Gold Medal for 3 Young Scientist Awardees of KSCSTE and 5 Science Literature Awards. The focal theme of this science congress session was ‘Our Environment - Our Future: Science and Technology for Rebuilding Kerala. Dr. Eldo T. I., Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT, Mumbai, Dr. J. Sundaresan, Head, Climate Change Informatics, CSIR- National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources, New Delhi, Er. G. Sankar, Architect, Habitat Technology Group, Thiruvanatnthapuram, Dr. Shekar Kuriyakose, Member Secretary, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority were the speakers in this session. This was followed by a panel discussion chaired by Prof. T. Jayaraman, State Planning Board (SPB), Kerala including the focal theme speakers and the experts, Dr. B. Ekbal, SPB, Kerala, Dr.Purnachandra Rao, Director, NCESS & Dr. P. V. Joseph, Former Director, IMD. A total of 986 delegates were registered for the 31stKSC. 624 delegates submitted papers in 12 subject areas. After peer reviewing 172 papers were selected for Oral presentation and 205 for poster presentation. Under the Best paper contesting section, 53 papers were selected for presentation during the event. Among 986 registered delegates, about 90% attended the Science Congress, among whom about 73% are women.

Rural Innovators’ Meet (RIM)

Rural Innovators’ Meet (RIM) is an annual event for the un-organized rural innovators and grass root innovators for exhibiting their products. The event will also provide a platform for the innovators to understand marketing methods, IPR issues, micro financing, etc. and to discuss the various problems and challenges faced by them. RIM – 2018 was jointly organized with M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), Wayanad, during 14th- 16thMay, 2018, at Agro Biodiversity Centre, Wayanad. Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala inaugurated RIM 2018, in a function presided by Dr. Suresh Das, the then Executive Vice President, KSCSTE. 136 applications were received for participating in RIM, out of which 82 selected projects were exhibited (37 under contest & 45 under exhibition) in the event. Shri. M.C. Dathan, Scientific Advisor to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Kerala distributed the prizes for the best innovators in the valedictory function on 16th May, 2018.
