SIKKIM SCIENCE CENTRE, MARCHAK Activities of Sikkim Science Center, Marchak-Ranipool:

The Sikkim Science Centre located in Marchak, Gangtok, is a one-of-its-kind establishment in the state. The centre was set up with the idea to develop a scientific temperament and promote creative learning among people. The centre conveys detailed information about science and technology in an informal way. It houses some interesting galleries such as the Unique Humankind gallery, Taramandal, Fun Science gallery, Gallery for Students' Activities and the science park.

While the Taramandal is a planetarium, the Unique Humankind gallery holds exhibits that educate about the functioning of human life and body. In the Fun gallery, science meets objects of recreation; and the Children’s Corner has puzzles and activities for young science enthusiasts. The museum’s Students’ Activities Corner organises seminars, camps and fairs, and the Science Park is a garden decorated with various objects that keep the visitors occupied.

Ice Stupa' a step towards artificial glaciations

The artificial Ice stupa was demonstrated in Thangu Village during November 2019. Previously, Department of Science and Technology, GoS has successfully developed a prototype of Ice Stupa at Thangu, North Sikkim in the winter month of 2018-2019 with the support of UNDP. In short, the demonstration of Ice Stupa is an experiment that could be generalize for reglaciation of the glacier and the success of the project can open up the new avenue of reglaciation of selected glacier in natural condition. The principle behind the formation of ice in the selected site is the breaking of water droplets from sprinkle system to small nuclei which gets frozen when it comes in contact with open freezing environment that accumulates to give structure of the cone that resembles Ice Stupa.

REGISTRATION OF PROTECTION OF PLANT VARIETY AND FARMER’S RIGHT

A new variety of Rice under Protection of Plant Variety and Farmer's Rights was registered in favour of Mr. Kailash Rana Mangar.
