28th Himachal Pradesh Children’s Science Congress (HPCSC)-2020

Children’s Science Congress (NCSC) is a flagship programme of National Council for Science & Technology Communications (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi. It aims to generate scientific temper among children through project activities in tune with the principle of ‘Learning by doing’. As Science popularization is one of major mandate of HIMCOSTE and hence it is the nodal agency for organization of HP Children’s Science Congress in the state of HP. It has been organizing HPCSC every year since 1993. During 2019 about 25000 (Twenty Five Thousand) students participated in the programme from across the state covering about 5000 schools. The HPCSC is organized at three levels viz. Sub- Division level, District Level and State Level. However this year due to COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent SOP of the Govt., the HP Children’s Science Congress could not be organized as per past practice. This year HPCSC-2020 has been organized through video conferencing/online mode through Google Meet/ Cisco Webex software from 28th October to 4th November, 2020.

Earthquake Resistant Construction Technology to Rural Mason’s

Three days training programme on “earthquake resistant construction technology” 4 nos training were organised during the year to rural mason’s under State Disaster Management Authority programme (SDMA) with the collaboration of central building research institute (CBRI) Roorkee organized by HIMCOSTE. About 54 Masons were got trained at the Gram Panchayat level of Sundernagar Block. Description:
The Himachal Pradesh with a geographical area 55673 sq. m. lies in seismic zone 4 and 5 requiring appropriate housing technologies like earthquake resistant housing., cost effective and solar passive housing technology but still these technologies have not reached in rural areas. Himachal Pradesh is having more than 90% rural population. it is important to have earthquake resistant house. In rural area houses construction is done by masons. These masons are not aware of earthquake resistant construction technology. The rural people hardly consult any engineer/ architect for construction their house and mostly seek advice from masons. But the masons are not aware of the latest construction techniques or latest technologies as no training/ course for semi/skilled masons are available anywhere.
