National Children's Science Congress (NCSC) 2019 in Telangana State

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), GoI is implementing the National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC) program throughout the country since 1993 onwards with their financial support. TSCOST is the State Coordinator in the state and implementing program since the year 2000 onwards. NCSC provides a unique opportunity to the Child Scientists in the age of 10 – 17 years to present their investigatory projects and interact with eminent Scientists and thereby creates a zeal for entering into the exciting world of Science & Technology.
The Focal Theme of NCSC is being decided by DST and gets changed for every two years. The theme for 2018 and 2019 is “Science, Technology & Innovation for a Clean, Green and Healthy Nation.”. The Sub Themes are (1) Eco System & Eco System Services, (2) Health, Hygiene and Sanitation, (3) Waste to wealth, (4) Society culture and livelihoods, (5) Traditional Knowledge Systems.
TSCOST organized the NCSC activity in our State in cooperation with School Education Department. The NCSC activity was conducted in the districts , district wise initially in the first phase. The total participation of projects in all districts together about 2904 out of which 139 project best projects among the district were selected to the State level activity.


The State level activity was conducted at Khammam during 14-16, September, 2019. As per the guidelines, (13) best projects were selected to National level activity.
Mentoring Session
Mentoring to these (13) projects was done under the guidance of Hon’ble Minister for Forests, Environment and Science & Technology, Govt. of Telangana on 20-11-19 at Hyderabad and felicitated the Child Scientists with Medals and Certificates.
National level Activity
The National level activity was conducted by DST, GoI at Thirvuvananthapuram during 27-31, December, 2019. A total of 650 projects ( from all over India and GULF countries ) have been presented at the National Event. Around 57 National Evaluators have screened the Projects in 14 languages. In this National Event, 19 projects have been adjudged Promising Projects after duly assessing the intellect of the Child Scientists and thorough scrutiny of the projects undertaken by them. One Project ( given below ) executed by Child Scientist from Telangana State also found its righteous place among the Top 19 National Level Promising Projects.
Participation in 107th Indian Science Congress 2020 :
1. As per the NCSC norms, TSCOST deputed the following 2 projects along with the respective Child Scientists and Guide Teachers to participate in the Children’s Science Congress Pavilion of the 107th Indian Science Congress 2020 scheduled to be held in Bengaluru during 3-7 January 2020.

Training Program on IPRs & Southern Region PICs Meet

At the instance of DST, Govt. of India, TSCOST organized the Training Program on IPRs & Southern Region PICs Meet at Hyderabad during 22-23 December 2019 with the sponsorship of TIFAC, DST, Govt. of India. PIC Coordinators and officials from Southern States and Goa along with the Chairman, Expert Group on Patent Facilitation Program of DST, GoI, Scientists from DST and TIFAC, Govt. of India and Expert Group Members of EG-PFP, DST, GoI participated in the deliberations on Patent Facilitation and training sessions.

National Meet of State Science & Technology Councils at Hyderabad

• Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, New Delhi desired that the “First Meeting of the Expert Group for the review of the progress of the State S&T Councils” be organised in Hyderabad, Telangana State during 22-24, August, 2019 by TSCOST. This is a National Meet of all the State Science & Technology Councils functioning in the Country.
• TSCOST organized this event successfully as per the guidelines at Hotel the Plaza, Begumpet, Hyderabad.
• The Honourable Minister for EFS&T, Law and Endowments, Govt. of Telangana and the Special Chief Secretary to Govt., EFS&T Dept., Govt. of Telangana graced the occasion and addressed on the need for application of Science & Technology in various sectors to improve socio-economic conditions of various sections of society.
• Member Secretaries, Director Generals, Directors, Heads and Officials of S&T Councils gave presentations on S&T activities carried out in their respective States/ Union Territories.

State Level Training Workshop for Resource Teachers on NCSC

Telangana State Council of Science & Technology (TSCOST) is organizing the program “National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC)” in Telangana State with the sponsorship and under the guidelines of Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India by involving School Going / Dropout Students in the age group of 10 – 17 years to inculcate Scientific Temper and to orient the students towards research activities through “Learning by Doing Scientific Projects”. As a part of the 27th Edition of NCSC 2019, TSCOST organized the State Level Training Workshop for Resource Teachers on NCSC on 28-05-2019 at the Conference Hall, Aranya Bhavan, Saifabad, Hyderabad. The objective of the workshop is to sensitize the NCSC fraternity present all over Telangana State about the salient features of the focal theme of 27th NCSC-2019 as well as organizational aspects and guidelines of NCSC. Smt. Parimala Hana Nutan, IPS, Superintendent of Police, CID, Department of Home, Govt. of Telangana graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the Inaugural Function. Smt. Parimala Hana Nutan, IPS strongly advocated for development of scientific temper and scientific awareness on several aspects of Health, Hygiene and Green Cover among students and various cross sections of society in the country, so that India continues to be a Clean, Green and Healthy Nation. Smt. G. Krishnaveni, Additional Secretary to Govt., EFS&T Dept., Govt. of Telangana, participating as the Guest of Honour, stressed on the need for increasing the reach, orientation and mentoring activities related to NCSC projects so that the students would be motivated towards undertaking research activities from the beginning of their academic careers. Prof. Ravi Kumar Puli, Member Secretary, TSCOST, Government of Telangana & State Coordinator for NCSC, presiding over the function, informed that the Govt. of India declared "Science, Technology & Innovation for a Clean, Green & Healthy Nation” as focal theme of 27th NCSC 2019. Prof. Ravi Kumar Puli, Member Secretary, TSCOST advised the NCSC District Coordinators and District Academic Coordinators of the state to guide the teachers, students and the school dropouts to prepare innovative projects based on the focal theme so that the students would imbibe scientific attitude from their childhood.

Dr. D. Kashinath, Associate Professor, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal and also the State Academic Coordinator participated in the Program and imparted the necessary guidance to District Level NCSC Coordinators and Academic Coordinators on various facets of preparation of NCSC projects with specific reference to the focal theme. The Chief Guest of the Valedictory Function Sri M. Prithvi Raju, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Forest Department, Govt. of Telangana urged all the NCSC functionaries to work for the noble cause of scientific temperament for the progress of the Nation. Sri M. Prithvi Raju, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Forest Department, Govt. of Telangana presented certificates to all the participants. TSCOST officers, NCSC functionaries such as District Coordinators, District Academic Coordinators and Resource Persons from all over the state have participated in the above Workshop.

POPULARISATION OF SCIENCE  ACTIVITIES

• TSCOST implemented a number of activities such as National Children’s Science Congress, National Science Day Celebrations, National Mathematics Day Celebration etc. with the objectives of spreading scientific temper, scientific literacy and strengthening scientific capabilities among a wide cross section of society i.e., child scientists, innovators, research scholars, scientists, students, artisans, youth, women and farmers for professional development of teachers, academicians etc. with the involvement of S&T Knowledge Dissemination Platforms such as the Regional Science Centre, Research Institutions, Universities, Colleges, S&T based Institutions in Government/ Private and Voluntary Sectors.

• TSCOST implemented the activities and programs of Regional Science Centre (RSC), Warangal including its operation and maintenance. Programs of the RSC include Demo of Scientific Principles, Visits of Students, Teachers, General Public to the RSC.

• TSCOST made efforts for establishment of Innovation Hub at a cost Rs. 1.80 crores at RSC, Warangal with the support from National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India and the Govt. of Telangana.

• TSCOST submitted proposals for establsihment of Regional Science Centre at Karimnagar ( Project cost Rs. 15.20 crores) with the support from Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India and National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Govt. of India and the Govt. of Telangana.
