Enhancing livelihood of Himalayan communities through action research and transforming wild produce into high value products

" NMHS-MOEF&CC), GOI funded project, executed by UCOST in collaboration with Himalayan Action Research Centre (HARC).

Main Objective was to establish successful community model that is replicable and promote sustainable use of natural and wild produce of Himalayan range.

A total of 19 products were developed from 9 wild fruits and nuts and 14 high value products have been launched under the brand name Mountain Beam.

Customized techniques for product development and their safe storage were designed and modern food processing machines like Automatic Conveyor Sealer, Cold Storage, Fruits & Vegetable dehydrator, Inkjet Batch coding machine, Nut Decorticator, Oil-Press machine, Fruits & Vegetable Washing machine and vacuum packaging machine were set up at Technical Resource Centre (TRC), Kaleshwer. A total of 56 villages were covered which includes 4674 beneficiaries having 21.0 Lakh annual earnings. An Estimated profit of Rs 5.0 Crore is expected in next 05 Years. SOPs and training manuals for each wild produce and a handbook on Wild Edible Plantshave been published"

Tissue Culture Lab at TRC Naugaon, Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand

The Council in collaboration with Himalayan Action Research (HARC) has developed a full-fledged tissue culture lab in Naugaon, Uttarkashi district with the financial support of DST, New Delhi. It aims at improving the quality of fruits, flowers and other products, diffusion of advanced technologies among the local farmers to minimize pre and post-harvest losses, along with generating a better atmosphere for the marketing of the products. The protocols development of all 4 apple root-stocks, carnation cultivar and Lilium and hardening of the in-vitro raised plants of carnation and Lilium have been accomplished. Healthy and disease free germplasm of carnation, Lilium and strawberry have successfully established. Now the tissue culture lab has become self-sustained and become important platform for the local farmers.
